Tennen, a 19-year-old sophomore at MSU, was at an off-campus party in the wee hours of Sunday morning in East Lansing, Mich. According to reports, two college-aged males approached him and asked if he was Jewish. When Tennen said indeed he was, the men made the Hitler salute and said they were part of the Ku Klux Klan.

Then Tennen was attacked, punched in the face which knocked him unconscious and broke his jaw. While Tennen was out, his mouth was stapled shut while about 20 people watched. No one attempted to intervene….

Bruce Tennen, the victim’s father, told The State News he plans to contact the Anti-Defamation League and the FBI regarding the incident. The hospital did not call law enforcement, and neither did anyone at the party, so police did not know about the incident until Tennen’s family contacted them Sunday….

East Lansing police said in a statement Tuesday the assault was “not likely a hate crime,” and they are not investigating it as one. Police did say they have identified a potential subject.

This is my hometown guys. I am so livid right now. So livid.

and like, again, i’m fully aware that as a Jew who’s half-Ashkenaz and half-Mizrahi I scan as white and have tons and tons of white privilege and on any given day i’m more worried about being attacked for being queer than i am for being Jewish, but i’ve definitely heard my fair share of anti-semitic slurs in high school and this sent shivers down my spine.

It is always really weird and intimate to find people who aren’t from here reading Diane Wakoski.

Hundreds of students work in this library system, on work study or otherwise. I was shocked to learn that I was one of the only ones in my department who receives work study. I was shocked to learn that only a few thousand (out of, you know, 40,000-some) students at this university receive work study.

Can you tell me, something, though? Why areallof the student custodial employees that I have ever seen students of color? Especially when notonestudent of color works main circ?
